I was about that age when I learned to shoot and I was very aware of the consequences of someone getting shot. I used a semi automatic 22 pistol though and was taught proper use, barrel always down range, don't look down the barrel if it jams (22 rimfire can really be irritating for that), don't put your thumb up where the slide comes back if it's an automatic, etc. I was also allowed to shoot 9mm but didn't like it because the kick of the gun was higher and was uncomfortable so I stuck to 22. The key was that I was supervised and had someone behind me to keep me from doing anything stupid with it.Auto though can be dangerous even for trained adults if they aren't taught how to handle it. Something that short was definitely dangerous. I don't think a full auto rifle with someone behind to help would have been as dangerous (It's a bit harder to shoot yourself with a rifle) on an open range, but the small size of the uzi clearly was a factor.
